On the way back in to the park the next morning, our first stop was at Big Stump Grove where we went on a very nice hike through woods populated by gigantic sequoia strumps.

Stumps were all over the place.

These two giants stood close by.
The stump of what was once one of the largest giant sequoias in the world. The Mark Twain stump was felled in 1891 so that sections of the trunk could be displayed in the natural history museums of New York and London. The remainder of the tree was cut up for grape stakes and fence posts.

This giant sequoia, named "The Resurrection Tree", is one of only two old growth sequoia trees still standing in the grove. |
||||||
It's hard to photograph the giant Sequoias trees because they are so big and tall.
Sorry for the blurry picture but Lynnette standing in front of the Resurrection Tree shows how massive it is.
